I had the honor
of seeing trumpet virtuoso, Arturo Sandoval,
perform at the Iridium Jazz Club on September
17. The celebrated musician is also an accomplished
pianist and timbale player, and during each
set he plays a lively solo on his prized
LP®
Tito Puente Timbales.
I first met Arturo in 1979, after he had
arrived in the United States with the Cuban
band, Irakere. During that visit, he and
many other musicians joined me in my home
to celebrate Tito Puente’s birthday.
It was during this particular occasion that
Tito began the tradition of throwing
himself, head first, into his birthday
cake.
