Venezuelan-born
percussionist Nenè Quintero recently
performed with the Miguel Zenon Quartet at the
Arka Lounge. His ethnically charged style of
percussion centered around a modified drum set
in which he incorporated various hand percussion
instruments, such as congas
and djembes
in place of the traditionally used snares and
tom-toms.
Saxophonist Miguel Zenon, pianist Edsel Gomez,
and bassist Waldo Chavez performed with him,
while violinist Alfredo De La Fe provided accompaniment
on several pieces. Few artists since Tito
Puente have displayed the charisma and talent
for playing their instrument that virtuoso De
La Fe does.
