One of the musicians that impressed me the most was Toots Thielmans who I had the occasion to meet several times. I was especially impressed when he sat in at the Jazz Cafe in Brussels, Belgium with the Latin Percussion Jazz Ensemble, a group I put on tour between 1979 and 1980 to spread the word of my percussion brand, LP.
Veteran saxophonist & flautist Mitch Frohman, known for his 25-year stint with the Tito Puente Orchestra as well as his many years with the Mongo Santamaria band, has embarked on a new small group project featuring himself accompanied by the Curtis Brothers trio.
I was very honored to have my photo of Tito Puente, that was taken in Radio City Music Hall sometime in the 1980s used for a United States Postage stamp. It is one of 5 artists honored. It addition to Tito Puente there is a stamp for Carmen Miranda, Carlos Gardel, Celia Cruz and Selena.
Classic Photos is a peek at the early years of my photography covering the jazz and emerging Latin/Salsa scenes including icons such as Tito Puente, Carlos “Patato” Valdez, Arsenio Rodriguez and more
